Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA)

Youth Mental Health First Aid is a nationally recognized, evidence-based training program designed to equip adults—such as parents, educators, coaches, caregivers, and youth workers—with the skills to support young people (typically ages 12–18) who may be developing mental health issues or experiencing a crisis

What Participants Learn

  • Recognize risk factors and warning signs of common adolescent mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, psychosis, eating disorders, ADHD, disruptive behavior, substance use, and self‑harm

  • Apply a five‑step action plan to respond appropriately:

    1. Assess for risk of suicide or harm

    2. Listen non‑judgmentally

    3. Give reassurance and information

    4. Encourage appropriate professional help

    5. Encourage self‑help and other support strategies

  • Engage through interactive learning, including role‑playing and simulations that help participants practice crisis assessment, intervention, and connection to professional or peer support

Training Format & Audience

  • The course is typically delivered in an 8‑hour format, either as a full-day session or spread over multiple shorter sessions

  • It’s tailored for adults who regularly interact with youth—teachers, school staff, youth group leaders, sports coaches, law enforcement, healthcare providers, parents, and caregivers

Why It Matters

  • Early intervention is essential: most serious mental health concerns emerge during adolescence, making timely recognition and support crucial

  • Reduces stigma and fosters empathy by increasing mental health literacy among caregivers and community members .

  • Boosts confidence and capability: evidence shows trainees gain greater knowledge, reduced stigma, and improved ability to offer help
